First and foremost, to begin and understand your personal beliefs, whether you believe in God, whether you’re a Christian or not; before absolutely knowing whether you will be spending all eternity in Heaven or Hell, is knowing without a shadow of doubt that Jesus Christ is your personal Savior into Heaven. He is the only way, the truth, and the light and path to Heaven. It is not by our good works or by just praying to God every day that makes us a Christian, or even our faith or acknowledgment of God or even that He created the Heavens and the Earth. It’s truly knowing and accepting the fact that God gave the ultimate sacrifice of sending His only begotten Son to pay the price of all mankind’s sin. Not only did His son pay for our sins on the cross by crucifixion, but He also spent three days in Hell for the full atonement of sin.
Universally, most of the Church believe that Jesus did indeed descend into Hell for that atonement of sin, then ascend into Heaven on the third day, which is where the Apostles Creed was written as a statement of faith from and to the whole Church.
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of Heaven and Earth;
And in Jesus Christ,
His only begotten son,
Our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontious Pilot,
Was crucified,
Dead and Buried;
Descended into Hell;
The third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into Heaven,
And sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence He will come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
The Holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.
Amen.
The controversy while Jesus descended into Hell; did He, burn in Hell?
There are some Christians that believe He descended into Hell, to burn for our sins, because the full payment wasn’t complete until Jesus burned in Hell.
According to Isaiah 53, there is a Mosaic Prophecy. In this prophecy it mentions how Jesus was to suffer and die. As evidence, Jesus did end up fulfilling this prophecy, right down to the very end! This proves that Jesus is and was the true Messiah, our Savior!
The Mosaic Sacrificial System was meant to be a shadow of what the Messiah would do, to atone for our sin.
In the Old Testament, animal sacrifices had to be repeated over and over again, year after year, but were never able to give perfect cleansing.
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
5 Wherefore when He cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Hebrews 10: 4-7
This why Christ used the same pattern of the animal sacrifices of the Old Testament to atone for our sins.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10: 10
So if we really want to know what Jesus did to take away the sin of the world, we have to understand the complete Mosaic Sacrificial System. In doing this, it appeased God’s wrath toward our sin. This sets us free and God is no longer angry at us when we become a Christian. Jesus made restitution for all our sins. So, not only did He just die for our sin, He also paid the full price for our sin. He paid for all and each wrong that we ever committed.
Jesus’ soul was made a trespass offering for our sin. Soul and Spirit live in our body The Soul is the intellect will and emotions of a person. The Spirit is the mental and spiritual attitude of the mind.
Sin comes from the heart, because we were born of sin since Adam. The inner man is full of evil. We therefore have a sinful soul nature.
7 Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering: it is most holy.
2 In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they kill the trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he sprinkle round about upon the altar.
3 And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof; the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards,
4 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul that is above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away:
5 And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the Lord: it is a trespass offering. Leviticus 7: 1-5
The kidneys, the liver, and the heart are the soul of an animal. The heart pumps the blood through the body; The kidneys and the liver filter the blood.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Is 53: 11
The sinful part of the animal, the kidneys and liver, not the heart, were to be consumed by fire, on the alter, as an offering. God is not satisfied until every sin has been paid for by fire unto Jehovah.
The cross alone would not satisfy the wrath of God, thereby making a propitiation for our sin. The travail of Jesus’ soul in Hell was also required. Another words, Jesus’ soul had to be placed in the God’s refining judgement just as the animal’s organs, kidney and liver be burned. It is an offering that’s made by fire. The fire on the alter represented the refining judgment of God. It was meant to remove all the impurities and all uncleanness and sin and wickedness until all that is left was pure.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Is 6: 5-7
2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth? for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:
3 And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Mal 3:2-3
This is why it’s not just God’s judgment, but His refining judgment!
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man builds upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it 14 If any man’s work abides which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 1 Cor 3: 11-15
The refining of Judgment of God will test everyone’s work, either good or bad. All impurities consumed and if anything is left, you will be rewarded. So, if nothing is left, you will not lose your salvation, just not rewarded, because you’re safe and been through the fire already.
The very moment we believed in Jesus Christ, our Spirit was baptized into His body, Jesus was made our sin, and He died on the cross for us. It did not end at the cross, because the trespass offering was an offering made by fire unto Jehovah. So when He died on the cross, His soul descended into Hell, into the fire, to pay the penalty for our sin. We are separated from His grace, mercy and love., but are experiencing His judgment, His refining judgement.
So why do they burn forever? Because there’s one sin that cannot be forgiven, the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit; rejecting Jesus Christ! It’s the one sin that can never be forgiven. You can never pay enough for rejecting Jesus. So after God sees that every sin has been paid for in the fire, He is satisfied! But it’s the travail of the soul that satisfies the wrath of God. It’s an offering made by fire.
When Jesus said, “it is finished” He is saying He is the last Passover lamb! There won’t be another…..He died once and for all! He was the burnt offering, the mill offering, the peace offering, the sin offering and the trespass offering. He’s done everything so that you can have an eternal relationship with God.
In the world today, modern day churches for the most part, because of their own doctrine, believe that Jesus went to Hell, but did not burn there.
Peter writes about the miracles, signs and wonders and wonders and how man basically killed Jesus in the flesh; rest in hope.
His body saw no corruption.
Nowhere in the bible does it say that Jesus burned in Hell.
Based on the Word, our sins were not paid for in Hell, but on the cross.
26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Acts 2:22-28
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalms 16:9-11
Jesus last words on the cross right before bowing His head and giving up the ghost, said to the Heavenly Father, “it is finished!”
For He had made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin that we may be made the righteousness of God.
After He died, He went down into Hell….Jesus was manifested as God in the flesh that never sinned ever, not once and as a sinless substitute,
He went to the cross and all the sins of the world were placed upon Him; that’s where God poured out His wrath upon sin, right there on the cross.
Then He died, but right before He did, He says, “it is finished!”
And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. 16Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 17Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. II Cor 5:21
Jesus did’nt later pay for our sins in Hell by burning in Hell.
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. Hebrews 9: 26-28
He died as a lamb. Not only did He offer up His body, but His soul as well on the cross. It took place on Calvary. He went down to Hell as sinless because He paid for our sins at the cross. The wrath of God is Hell which was suffered on the cross.
4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
According to the bible His soul went to Hell but it didn’t burn in Hell…..He didn’t pay for our sins twice! He went to Hell to preach to those there. There were fallen Angels that disobeyed God.
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 1Peter 3:18-20
These fallen angels that disobeyed God and He put them into Hell with Chains of Darkness.
The Great White Judgement ….. the fallen angels will come out of Hell, but later cast into a Lake of fire.
Abraham’s Bossom or Paradise.
In the bible before Jesus died, on the cross, there were two places in the underworld, Hell on one side and on the other side Abrahams Bossom which is called Paradise.
He went over to the other side while in Hell and met some captives and took them up with Him as He ascended back…
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) Eph 4:8-10
Hell has enlarged herself because He took the captives out so this vacancy now a part of Hell, for lost people.
God accepted His payment on the cross, His soul came down to Hell to preach to those fallen angels in Hell and took the captives with him.
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Luke 16:22-25
All that in Hell is for loss people.
He brought the captives up on the earth to walk around then took them into Heaven. The old saints arose from Paradise and walked around on earth, before He took them to Heaven.
Think about the Pharisees for three years how they judged Jesus and denied himself as the Messiah. Many saints came out of the grave. After He took them up into Heaven Hell enlarged itself!
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Matt 27:52-53
He died in the big fish with the waters and weeds around my head and went to Hell forever. For three days he was in Hell. God literally took his soul out of Hell and put him back into the whale and expelled out of the whale.
Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. Jonah 2:1-10
Jesus mentions Jonah, they seek the sign , Jonah the prophet…
And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. Luke 11:29
Jesus brings up Jonah again, and says it will also be as Jonah, Jesus would be 3 days and 3 nights instead the whale, would be in the heart of the earth. He didn’t burn in Hell like Jonah did. So Jesus was like Jonah in a way, just didn’t burn there. Without the shedding of blood atonement, there’s no remission of sins. The blood paid for our sins.
He went to go to Hell for a purpose …. To preach to those spirits and to take them out.
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 1 Peter 1:18
It’s all about the blood thru the cross and He finished the work of salvation.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Eph 1:7
God gave to us to be a propitiation through faith in His blood on the cross to declare His righteousness for the remission of all our sins that have been done.
past, through the forbearance of God; Romans 3:25
Our physical body when we pass will go to the grave. Our soul will either go to Heaven or Hell. The decision is our choice to what we believe Jesus Christ did to atone for all our sins.
Despite the Church argument whether He burned or didn’t burn is only the debate. What is important is personally that I believe, the full Gospel message, Jesus had to die on the cross and His soul spend 3 days burning in Hell for every sin that I committed.
